Inquizitive Newsletter – May 2011

We hope you’ve had a chance to come in and see us in the new shop, if you haven’t then you’re missing out! Inquizitive’s new central location is wonderful. Being only an incredibly short walk from the Brisbane Street Mall puts us right in the action! So if you are yet to come in and say hello, it is well worth a visit, because with the new shop comes a magnitude of new changes!

Some of those changes are 2 new staff members, we have Janine who will be working every weekday afternoon and Claire will be joining our weekend staff. Janine and Claire are very busy spending there free time playing games at home with family and friends. If you have yet to meet Janine and Claire, then we recommend you come in and meet them, and maybe suggest your favourite game for them to try because they’re eager to learn EVERY game that Inquizitive stocks. If you would like a sneak peak at any of the Inquizitive Team, then why not have a look at our team profile page!

Another new change for Inquizitive is the introduction of our Reward Card.  If you have been in recently you have probably already received one, but if you haven’t then for every purchase over $20 in one transaction you receive a stamp on your Reward Card. Once you have 5 stamps, you are entitled to $10 off your sixth Purchase.

AGFEST – 5th, 6th and 7th May

Inquizitive is going to our very first AGFEST, and the whole team is very excited! We will be closing the shop on Wednesday 4th May at 1pm and re-opening on Sunday 8th May at 10am, so that we can focus completely on AGFEST. Inquizitive will have a 10 meter by 10 meter marquee packed full of all your favourites from the shop (and maybe even some surprises).

While at AGFEST Inquizitive will be participating in the ‘Yellow Brick Road’ education promotion. We have some great giveaways for the participating school children who visit the Inquizitive marquee on Thursday and Friday with their school. If they get our 2 questions correct they will receive one of our great giveaways.

If you come and see us, which we hope you ALL will, you may even get to meet the suppliers of your favourite products for a one on one demonstration. Tracey from Enviroblox will be with us for the 3 days; Tracey will have hands on demonstrations happening all day, where you can come and make something to take home, Tracey is amazing with what she makes with the Enviroblox.  Leonie Cutts who invented Sorts for Kids will also be with us for the 3 days. Leonie will be demonstrating her new game, The Very Bad Game which is a board game based on the wacky characters and themes of the immensely popular Bad Book series by Andy Griffiths. Karen from Klutz/Chicken Socks is also attending; Karen will be there on Friday and Saturday demonstrating Thumb Animals and Crayon Rubbings.

If you are as excited about this as we are then you’ll want to know where we are so you can rush in and say hello as soon as the gates are open at 8am! You can find us at M80 on the corner of Main Street and Eighth Avenue, up near the Coles Picnic Area.

Easter

Did you know that there is approximately 530 calories in a single chocolate Easter egg? To burn off these calories it takes approximately 45 minutes of running, 4 hours of dancing or 2.5 hours of bike riding. So if you want a nice relaxing Easter break we ask you WHY CHOCOLATE? If you would like a relaxing time over the Easter period then a present from Inquizitive is the perfect thing. Let your brain do the work while you pick your feet up and relax. Also avoid those morning arguments and afternoon stomach-aches by giving the gift that every kid really wants. A game or puzzle from Inquizitive! Why not check out or recommendations for the perfect Easter Gift from last month’s newsletter.

Remember Inquizitive will be closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday/Anzac day, April 22nd, 24th and 25th respectively. So get in early to pick up those amazing presents you have planned for your loved ones (or yourself).

Race Around the World wins 3 industry awards!

In our last newsletter we spoke about Race Around the World being nominated for Australian Puzzle of the Year for 2011. Well, during our visit to the Australian Toy Fair in Melbourne, we were told that Race Around the World had not only won Australian Puzzle of the Year for 2011 by the Australian Games Association, but it had also won Best Game for 2011 and Best Australian Designed or Made Product for 2011 by the Independent Toy Specialists of Australia.

Now if you have been out of town (or hiding under a rock) then you will not have seen the girls with Louise (owner of Inquizitive) on WIN News, Southern Cross News, in the Examiner Newspaper or on the ABC Radio!

Once again, Inquizitive would just like to congratulate Katelyn Victory, Elisabeth West, D’nykia Frost and Michelle Els on such a wonderful achievement!

If you have not yet purchased your own copy of Race Around the World – then why not? The Toy Industry thinks it’s great, Inquizitive thinks is great – so why don’t you?

New Toy Fair Products

Troy – $34.99

Do you like medieval walls and towers? Then you should check out Troy. The object of the game is very simple: place the 4 walls on the game board so that all the blue knights are inside the city and all the red knights are on the outside.

Although the object is very simple, solving the 60 multi level challenges is not! You need to find the right place for 4 puzzle pieces. What makes placing the walls even more difficult is that the towers on the walls can prevent you to place them next to each other. Only the corners and ends of the walls without towers fit next to each other on the game board. Complete these challenges and you will feel like a true hero!

Toppletree – $24.99

Grow 4 in a row but don’t topple as you go! Delightfully tactile, Toppletree is an exciting strategic game that builds to a nail-biting conclusion as players take turns adding to an ever growing tree that becomes increasingly unstable with every play! Listen for the squeals of delight as players successfully add branches of their colour to the tree, or the crash of destruction as the unbalanced tree topples to the ground. The first player to get 4 in a row wins, provided the tree isn’t toppled in the process! Toppletree is almost like a cross between Jenga and Connect 4. It’s a smart (and addictive!) construction game with a strategic twist that offers fun for the whole family.

Penguins on Ice – $34.99

The object of the game is to pack the ice so that every puzzle tile can fit on the game board AND to make sure that all the penguins are in the right spot. Not complicated we hear you say? Well, just remember that each of the 5 pentomino shaped pieces has 3 or 4 possible shapes, but of course you don’t know in most challenges which shape you need for the solution. There are 60 challenges ranging from easy to extremely difficult. Just wait to you have to ‘morph’ the ice into different shapes so the penguins make it into the right position!

Ex Libris – $34.99

Fresh from the shelves of the famed British Library in London and the Bodleian Library in Oxford comes Ex Libris, a game to challenge your literary acumen and test your writing skills. Each card gives you a title, author and plot summary of a novel or short story.

At the start of a round one player, taking a turn as the reader, picks a card and reads it out. The other players then have to write a plausible opening or closing sentence to the work in an attempt to bluff fellow players into believing their ’script’ to be the genuine one. These are all handed in to the reader, who has meanwhile written down the genuine sentence (given on the back of the card). They are shuffled, and each is read out. The winning player is the one who has most votes cast for his or her entry (while further points are won if you manage to identify the genuine sentence).

Anaconda – $21.99

Keep your anaconda together in each of the 100 challenges. Place all puzzle pieces together on the game board and recreate the snake from head to tail. Sound easy? You need to watch out for the snake in the grass – the puzzle tiles are double sided! You must choose which side you need to shape your snake.

The Very Bad Game – $44.99

Based on the wacky characters and themes of the immensely popular Bad Book series by Andy Griffiths – one of Australia’s most successful writers, The Very Bad Game is a must-have companion to the Bad Book Series and the perfect gift for the hundreds of thousands of Griffith’s fans. Players race around Badtown trying to find the 4 missing pieces of their lost pet. But it’s not easy! They have to get past the weird and wacky folk of Badtown – who will send them every which way around the board for all kinds of very bad reasons. And watch out – the whole town may even blow up! It’s a lot of nonsense and riotous family fun!

IQ Twist – $15.99

Has your mind been stretched to its limits with IQ Puzzler or IQ splash? Well now you can twist yourself in a whole new way with the IQ twist!

In every challenge a few coloured pegs are placed on the game board. The object of the game is still to place all puzzle pieces on the game board. But because of the pegs, this is only possible when there is a hole inside the puzzle piece you want to place on that exact position. And what’s more, you can only do that when the puzzle piece and the peg have the same colour.

You can use the playing pieces whichever way up you want, which means that that most puzzle pieces can be orientated in 8 different ways (except the symmetrical ones). But there are 32 places on the game board, so the number of possibilities is often quite high. All challenges have just one solution!

With 100 challenges ranging from easy to extremely difficult; there’s no doubt you will be challenged and entertained.
